I am an art educator
Art is a process, not just a product and art education needs be more than teaching students to make artwork; we need to teach students to be artists. Artists are creative thinkers, innovators, problem solvers, collaborators, observers, creators, analyzers, and explorers. Students with these skills will not only be more capable as a student and a person, but will be ready for future opportunities that we can now only just imagine.
I believe that every person is an artist and as an art educator I can help students on the path to making art that resonates with their soul. Art is a means to explore, question, express, experiment, and imagine the world inside and outside of the self. This is why I base my teaching in organic learning, where students take a journey to discover knowledge instead of following a step by step recipe.
By creating a culture of learning, exploring, and taking risks where every person in the room can be a teacher, I empower the students to be brave and take control of their learning. My curriculum involves intertwining traditional techniques with 21st century skills, technical knowledge with organic learning, fine art with modern approaches, and historical context with current culture. This allows me to engage the individual and foster the artist within each student.
